BEAKL layout

BEAKL is another alternative layout. While I'm sceptic about most of these off-the-shelf solutions, I really liked the home box approach and the somewhat unusual penalty table.

I've just stumbled upon the BEAKL layout. (Btw, BEAKL stands for Balanced Effortless Advanced Keyboard Layout.)

The takeaways:

Rewarding middle finger on the top row while penalizing it on the lower one.

Home box concept. There's nothing wrong with my pinkies on the home row, but I have to measure their exact response times yet.

Thumb clusters rule.
